The HLDF
has been asked by Dr. Albino Malungo, former Minister of
Social Services and present President of the Angolan Red
Cross to help in Humanitarian Affairs. Dr. Malungo and
Mr.von Rupp meet during the Civil War in Angola when
Humanitarian work shared certain risk. Landmines, HIV,
Malaria not only kill and maim innocent people but continue
to sap the economic strength of a country and threaten its
political stability, says Dr. Malungo.
Landmines
There are
80 to 119 million residual landmines across the world that
continue to pose a deadly hazard to the civilian population
- that's, one land mine for every 16 children in the world,
even when the war that caused them is but a distant memory.

HIV
More than
20 million people have died of AIDS since 1981. Africa has
12 million AIDS orphans. By December 2004 women accounted
for 47% of all people living with HIV worldwide, and for 57%
in sub-Saharan Africa. Young people (15-24 years old)
account for half of all new HIV infections worldwide - more
than 6,000 become infected with HIV every day.
Of the
6.5 million people in developing and transitional countries
who need life-saving AIDS drugs, fewer than 1 million are
receiving them.
During
2004 around five million adults and children became infected
with HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), the virus that
causes AIDS. By the end of the year, an estimated 39.4
million people worldwide were living with HIV/AIDS. The year
also saw more than three million deaths from AIDS, despite
the availability of HIV antiretroviral therapy which reduced
the number of deaths in high income countries.
Malaria:
WHO
estimates that every day the disease kills 3,000 children.
Each year, 300 to 500 million people develop malaria and 1.5
to 3 million–mostly children–die, according to the World
Health Organization (WHO).
Malaria is endemic in more than 100 countries, which are
visited by more than 125 million international travellers
every year
Malaria is mainly found throughout the tropical and
sub-tropical regions of the world
A recent estimate shows that almost a third of Plasmodium
falciparum cases are contracted in South East Asia and more
than two-thirds of cases are contracted in Africa
The HLDF
with Marlon, in cooperation with large global Sponsors
Mr.von Rupp has worked with when living in the United States
and the Bill and Melinda Gates, William J. (Bill) Clinton,
Gerald Ford Foundations, Governments from affected countries
and the world community, the HLDF and Marlon are ready to
play their part to try to make the ecological and
humanitarian disaster a thing of the past.
